Enemy At The Gate

We’re living in an incredible
time. For the first time in history, we can listen to the opinions, ideas, and
learn about the accomplishments from some of the world’s brightest and most accomplished human
beings.
This isn’t exclusively through
TED talks, but TED conferences have offered some of the easiest and most direct
access to this information.
The most inspiring TED talks have a way of moving you to
action. They plant a seed within an 18-minute window that makes you think
deeply. Yet, for many of us, watching hundreds of TED talks is also a sure way
to kill productivity. I have a shortcut. These quotes will help you decide if
you want to watch the full session. The quote is a good summary of the main
point of the talk.
1. "Ignorance
and fear are but matters of the mind--and the mind is adaptable." - Daniel Kish
2. "My idea of
a perfect world really can't be designed by one person or even by a million
experts. It's going to be 7 billion pairs of hands, each following their own
passions." - Jay Silver
3. "Human
relationships are rich and they're messy and they're demanding. And we clean
them up with technology. And when we do, one of the things that can happen is
that we sacrifice conversation for mere connection. We shortchange ourselves.
And over time, we seem to forget this, or we seem to stop caring." - Sherry Turkle
4. "On street
corners everywhere, people are looking at their cell phones, and it's easy to
dismiss this as some sort of bad trend in human culture. But the truth is, life
is being lived there." - Ze Frank
5. "The secret to happiness is low expectations." - Barry Schwartz
6.
"Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and
change." - Brené Brown
7. "Everybody
wants to be relevant. We want to be relevant personally. We want to be relevant
in our businesses." - Rick Warren
8. "People
don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it." - Simon Sinek
9. "Every
education system in the world is being reformed at the moment, and it's not
enough. Reform is no use anymore, because that's simply improving a broken
model. What we need...is not evolution, but a revolution in education. This has
to be transformed into something else." - Sir Ken
Robinson
10. "Hip-hop
is not only the voice of the youth, but we are taught as children in rhyme
fashion, way before listening to hip-hop. First rhyme I learned was the
ABCs." - GZA
11. "Gardening
is the most therapeutic and defiant act you can do, especially in the inner
city. Plus, you get strawberries." - Ron Finley
12. "Someone,
at some point, came up with this very bad idea that an ordinary individual
couldn't make a difference in the world. I think that's just a horrible
thing." - John Skoll
13. "What
we're finding is it's not necessarily the reality that shapes us, but the lens
through which your brain views the world that shapes your reality. And if we
can change the lens, not only can we change your happiness, we can change every
single educational and business outcome at the same time." - Shawn Achor
14. "You don't
wake up one day no longer a racist. It takes generations to tear that
intuition, that DNA, out of the soul of a people." - Lawrence Lessig
15. "You have
to utilize who you are in your work. Nobody else can do that. Nobody else can
pull from your background, from your parents, your upbringing, your whole life
experience." - David Carson
16. "There's
zero correlation between being the best talker and having the best ideas."
- Susan Cain
17. "You can
only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don't make money your
goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that
people can't take their eyes off you." - Maya
Angelou
18. "If you
hire people just because they can do a job, they'll work for your money. But if
you hire people who believe what you believe, they'll work for you with blood
and sweat and tears." - Simon Sinek
19. "I am
fully aware that there are many people out there in the world who don't like
me. Who say mean things about me every day. But I'd rather not know. If you
came up to me and you told me that there was a man that I'd never met
before who was saying horrible things about me, and then you then listed
all the awful things he'd said about me to my face: You're the bad guy. That
person has a right to say whatever he wants about me. I've never met him
before, but he can say whatever he wants; that is his right. It wasn't until
you told me that I knew what was going on. You've turned it into a personal
attack." - Daniel Sloss
20. "There are
thousands and thousands of people out there leading lives of quiet, screaming
desperation, where they work long, hard hours at jobs they hate to enable them
to buy things they don't need to impress people they don't like." - Nigel Marsh
21.
"Vulnerability is our most accurate measurement of courage." - Brené Brown
22. "Very
often, a change of self is needed more than a change of scene." - A.C. Benson
23. "Most
think the 'past equals the future.' Decision is the ultimate power." - Tony Robbins
24. "Sitting
has become the smoking of our generation." - Nilofer
Merchant
25. "When you look at the moon, you think, 'I'm really small. What are my problems?' It sets things into perspective. We should all look at the moon a bit more often." - Alain de Botton
